The state of India I am in is called Kerala, which is known for its enormous fishing community. They say if the fish in Kerala isn't the best in the world, it's at least the best in the Arabic Sea. Instead of the normal fishing methods we would expect in the U.S. the fishermen use very thin nylon nets to fish for small game, but in particular they use Chinese fishing nets. This method of fishing has been used since all the way back to the 1400's. Thousands of people in India still use this method today as their source of income.
During the weekdays we are always busy working, but nights and especially the weekends are free to do as we wish. Two weekends ago me and two of my friends here volunteering with me took a weekend trip to a nearby beach called, Marari Beach. Considering my surroundings here in Ft. Kochi, I wasn't expecting much from the beach. But when we arrived I was pleasantly surprised to find myself at easily one of the most beautiful beaches I've ever been too. The water wasn't necessary clear by any means, but the scenery and peacefulness of the beach is pretty hard to beat.
^ I found this whale type animal washed up on shore, If anybody knows what it is please let me know, I tried to look it up but could not find it.
Ft. Kochi (the city I stay in) is known for its arts. There is currently an art festival going on throughout the entire town, but unfortuntetly I have not had a chance to go see the exhibits yet, but I plan to go before I leave for Nepal next week. I will be sure to upload pictures of it all. But Ft. Kochi is also well known for its street art, you can find awesome murals on the walls all throughout town.....
The locals that I have befriended here may only be 18-20 years old but they are about to open their own cafe here in Ft. Kochi, this is the mural they have just painted on the walls:
I have run out of time here at the Internet cafe, but I have plenty more photos of the kids at school, locals spots here in Kochi, and a couple of Hindu festivals I've gone too. I also have some videos of the kids, even one or two of the kids dancing to their favorite song "Gangnam Style" as well as some videos of the Hindu festivals which include traditional Indian drummers and tons of massive and dressed up elephants. I will upload all of these within the next couple of days. Once again thank you everyone for your support, and interest in this amazing opportunity.
